The following FAQs answer your most important questions about the coronavirus and its impact on the University of Tartu. These FAQs are updated continually.
Many countries, including Estonia, have introduced travel restrictions. Currently, applications for Schengen visas, long-stay visas or residence permits to Estonia cannot be submitted at Estonian embassies and visa centres of external service providers. The University of Tartu cannot predict as when the travel restrictions will be lifted for different countries. We will notify on this website once the usual visa/TRP application procedure is restored. Please also see updated info on crossing borders here. Information on self-isolation requirements for passengers coming to Estonia is hereThe usual visa application procedure is described here.
For visa/TRP application, students need to present their admissions letter (scanned version). In order to receive your admissions letter, all documents need to be properly submitted as stated under Admissions questions 3 and 8.
International degree seeking and visiting students should apply for housing in UT dormitories or in other housing facilities in Estonia once international travel is no longer limited, meaning air and other connections have been restored and visa services, if needed, are available. There is no need to worry about being late for housing and not getting a place. There is an option to find an apartment/ a room outside UT dormitories.
UT housing application system is open throughout summer.
It is the student’s responsibility to check upon their specific travel track options.
Opening of the borders will take place gradually, please see further information here and also here Please see information on self-isolation requirements for passengers coming to Estonia here.

We try to do our best and make sure that our extended deadlines would help you as much as possible. UT also needs some extra time to process the documents submitted by extended deadlines. Considering the situation, we have extended the deadline for uploading the English language test result to DreamApply until June 30, 2020 (applies for bachelor´s and master´s programmes only). The extended deadline applies to the applicants who had registered for a test, but their initial test was cancelled or postponed. For us to be aware of your situation, send an e-mail to your admissions coordinator at UT that includes a proof of the test cancellation and a date for taking a new test. Your coordinator’s e-mail address is at the end of your DreamApply UT notifications.
Please note that as an alternative to traditional language tests, we also accept the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition test result. For further information please see English language requirements.
Considering the situation, we have extended the deadline for submitting the required documents. The date by which the documents must reach us is June 30, 2020 (applies for bachelor´s and master´s programmes only). Please note that we will issue an official admission letter only after we have received all your documents, and these meet our established requirements (check country-specific requirements). In some cases, we might also accept electronic education documents, if these are sent directly from the institution issuing the documents (school/university).
NB! All admitted students, who need to use the extended deadline must contact their admissions coordinator and inform their coordinator of a possible date for delivering the required documents. All such cases will be reviewed individually.
We are aware that this summer graduations (final exam/thesis defence) may take place later than usual. However, we need to have a proof of your graduation before the beginning of our academic year, no later than August 24, 2020. Thus, if you graduate this summer and already know that you cannot submit your graduation documents by the end of July, please definitely inform your admissions coordinator when your graduation is due, either in August or earlier. Only then we can see whether submitting the final proof of your graduation by the last week of August is possible.
No. UT does not practice deferment, meaning we do not have a system of taking a gap year.
Yes. The scholarships listed cannot be transferred to the academic year 2021/22. Please note that the payments of the named scholarships will start once a scholarship holder is in Estonia, we do not make payments to those still abroad.
We intend to start the new academic year at the usual time – this year on 31 August, 2020. With regard to the arrival of international degree and exchange students who start their studies, we are flexible and take the situation into account. In English-taught programmes we will allow international students who have difficulties with entry to Estonia to take part in the studies via online tools and, if necessary, on an individual basis until the end of October (or the end of the first semester, depending on the programme) or until most international students have arrived to Estonia. The final decision regarding the form and beginning of studies will be made depending on the study programme. The admitted students will be notified. In case we need to delay the start of the new academic year, we will inform our admitted students immediately.
The official admission letter will be issued to you after we have received by post all the required application documents that were indicated in the offer letter. The admission letter will be sent to you electronically via DreamApply.
