Eating in Tartu
While there is no central student cafeteria or meal plans at the University of Tartu, most faculties have cafes in their buildings.
Tartu has also numerous restaurants, cafés and buffet bars that offer traditional Estonian, Russian, Italian, Chinese and international food at very affordable prices (daily specials 2-6 EUR). If you live in a dorm, every block of 3 rooms in Raatuse dormitory is equipped with a shared kitchen and a dining area.
There are many big supermarkets and smaller grocery stores all around Tartu. You can pay with a debit and credit card in every shop. Most stores open at 9 am and close at 22 pm. Discount cards are also available at almost every store. The closest stores to the dormitory are:
- Comarket (Raatuse 20)
- Ujula konsum (Ujula 2)
- Kivi Konsum (Narva mnt 25a)
- Tartu Kaubamaja (Riia 1)
- Rimi (Turu 2, in Tasku Centre and Küüni 7, in Kesklinna Keskus)
There are also markets in Tartu. Markets are divided into two: market hall and open market. Market hall (Vabaduse pst 1) is open from Mon- Fri 7:30 am - 5:30 pm, Sat 7:30 am - 4 pm and Sun 7:30 am to 3 pm. Open market (Soola 10) is open from Mon-Sat 8 am - 4 pm and Sun 8 am - 3 pm. It is closed during the winter period. It is possible to pay only in cash. Communication is in Estonian and Russian, some sellers might speak a little English.
